Aboard the Carnival Miracle, East Pacific Ocean
This morning I slept in until almost 8am! In the “real world” if I did such an irresponsible thing, I would feel guilty, like I was completely wasting away my day. But the amazing thing about being on a cruise is that I did not feel the slightest bit of guilt whatsoever!
This is the life! Is THIS the real world?!
Yesterday when we checked in to the cruise, I asked the checkin staff if it was possible to get a cabin upgrade to a larger room. After all, I explained, how could Carnival possibly deny such a request from this cute, young couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on their ship? We were told that it might very well be possible because the ship was only carrying about 2,200 passengers (out of capacity of over 3,000). We were told we should check with Guest Services after boarding the ship. We waited in line almost an hour, only to be told that we would have to come back after 5pm to see what, if anything, would be available. In the meantime we had unpacked our 4 suitcases and had settled into our cabin. We also realized that our room was perfectly located - 2 decks up was the buffet area including the beverage area, Guy’s Burger Joint, and the pizza bar, the adults-only Serenity lounge, easy access to the pools, and the round-the-ship walking track; 5 decks down was the main dining hall. We decided to just stay put and forgo any available upgrades. We couldn’t have a better location.
This ship was rockin’-n-rollin’, squeakin’-n-creakin’ today, and not just from all the various genres of music being played at all the various venues around the ship! The seas were rough, with swells, according to the captain, of 10 feet! It looked like the ship was filled with a thousand stumbling, drunken sailors, but it was just the effect of the boat plowing through and over those 10-foot waves. They even provided barf bags throughout the ship, though I didn’t see anyone using them. Anyway, the skies were sunny, the wind was brisk and cool, and a good time was had by….well…if not by all, at lease by Anne and me!
We managed to find some peaceful solace in the adult-only Serenity section on Deck 9 as well as a completely quiet area on Deck 3 called Gatsby’s Garden - comfortable chairs by small tables next to large round porthole windows overlooking the ocean. It was, of course Great, if you get my meaning. In both places we enjoyed watching the rolling and roiling waves and the accompanying gentle rising and falling of the boat.
Love cruising!
At dinner tonight we shared our table with a couple who escaped Russia 40 years ago. They were a fascinating couple who now live in Phoenix.
After dinner we watched a show in the Phantom Theater - a woman singing songs by female artists of the 1960s. It was a nostalgic musical cruise back to our young and innocent days!
After the show, we did our usual bar hopping around the ship to hear the various musical performers.
Another great day!
